Guest Article: Your CEO Wants To Hire Donald Trump. What Now? by Melissa Fairman

The Hair

Donald Trump is by far the most entertaining “politician” we’ve seen in a while. He’s brash, opinionated, insulting and has awful hair. But he continues to climb  in the Republican presidential primary polls. Tonight he will be bringing the circus to Cleveland when he participates in the first Republican presidential debate.

In general I avoid politics at the primary level, but this circus has drawn me in. I keep wondering who on earth would vote for this guy? After some thought I have an idea based on my own background working with people and organizations.

People are interested in Donald Trump because he is loud and opinionated. You do not have to guess where The Donald stands. I think that is incredibly refreshing to voters. Politics has gotten to the point where politicians are trying to impress so many special interests that they cannot or will not give a straight answer.

Its the same in many organizations and that’s why at some point you will end up dealing with a Donald Trump heir-apparent and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Right or wrong, inflammatory people like Donald Trump spice things up. They start ferocious debates that your company might need in order to move forward.

So what do you do when your CEO or Senior Leader comes to you and says “Donald Trump is my successor.” Or “I want to promote Donald Trump to the head of Sales/Marketing/other sensitive and highly-visible position.”

You have a couple options for a response:

  1. Laugh in their face and say “No really who were you thinking?” Depending on your relationship this could a CLM.
  2. Acknowledge that the company needs a breath of fresh air and discuss other suitable candidates inside or outside the company.
  3. Stick your hand in the air,  see which way the wind is blowing and go in that direction.  You can only fight the tide so much right?

I’m a strong advocate for option two, or options one and two.  There is a reason why a blowhard like Donald Trump is suddenly a viable option,  you need to figure out that reason and find a solution that doesn’t sink your company into bankruptcy, or in the case of the Republican party another lost chance at the White House.
